New York Cares' Orientation

Date: Friday, February 22, 2019

Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Brief: New volunteers from New York Cares need to attend a quick and easy orientation session that will introduce them to New York Cares' year-round volunteer opportunities.

1. Recover Food with Rescuing Leftover Cuisine

Date: Friday, March 01, 2019

Time: 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Brief: Volunteer an hour of a time and it will go to feeding the homeless who need the services provided by the NYC Rescue Mission.

2. Beautify Fort Tryon Park

Date: Saturday, March 09, 2019

Time: 10 am - 1 pm

Brief: Beautify this historic and scenic park by weeding, planting, removing invasive species and more.

3. Animal Care and Composting

Date: Thursday, March 14, 2019

Time: 8:45 am - 12:00 pm

Brief: Ride the Governors Island Ferry to Governors Island. Enjoy a 15-minute nature walk to the Earth Matter Compost Learning Center where 72 chickens live year-round.

We cared for chickens by feeding and watering them. Then begin the composting process by layering sawdust and wood chips in the Hen House.

This project requires wheeling wheelbarrows and transporting containers of water short distances. It's completely outdoors working on farmland so it's important to wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty and dress for the weather.

4. LUNCH 'N GAMES WITH PS 375M

Date: Friday, March 15, 2019

Time: 1:00 am - 12:00 pm

Brief: Teach children educational and communication skills as we play math, vocabulary and other 'just-for-fun' games with them on their lunch hour.

5. ART EXPLORERS AT BROOKLYN LANDMARK ELEMENTARY

Date: Saturday, March 16, 2019

Time: 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Brief: Come out and inspire creativity with the students in Art Explorers at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School. We did an embroidery project using burlap and tapestry needles. We were working with third-, fourth- or fifth-graders who are at the school for Saturday test prep lessons.

For the project, the kids can embroider their names, initials or whatever they want as long as we keep it simple. They will draw their design out in chalk on the burlap first and then we'll start stitching. Ideally, the volunteers will work with the kids in small groups or pairs.
